Sony Launches High-Resolution Audio Walkman NW-A25 for Rs. 13,990

Sony has announced the launch of the Walkman NW-A25 high-resolution audio player in India at a price of Rs. 13,990. The audio player is available now through Sony's extensive distribution network, and is available in five colour options, namely Black, Blue, Pink, Red, and Yellow.

The Sony NW-A25 has an internal storage capacity of 16GB (expandable via microSD card - up to 128GB) and supports high-resolution audio formats of up to 24-bit/192kHz resolution. Formats supported by the player include mp3, wav, aiff, wma, aac, he-aac, flac, and Apple Lossless. The device also has a 2.2-inch TFT-LED screen that serves visual cues for the device, as well as FM radio capability.

The player is USB 2.0 compliant for charging and data transfers, and is also Bluetooth 3.0 compatible with A2DP and LDAC compliance for use with wireless headsets. It does not come with bundled headphones, but allows for a frequency response ranging from 20-40,000Hz when used with separate headphones. It can also be used to view images and play back videos.

With the launch of the NW-A25 in India, Sony is on a high-resolution spree, having also recently launched the SRS-X99 high-end speaker for Rs. 49,990. The company also launched a handful of audio products last month at CES.

Apple Employees Wooed With Big Money to Sell Login Credentials: Report

Apple Employees Wooed With Big Money to Sell Login Credentials: Report

It might not come as a surprise to know that Apple employees are approached by hackers quite often. Reports have been coming in of fraudsters trying to lure Apple executives to share their login details in exchange for thousands of dollars.

Several current and former Apple employees claim that they have been contacted by hackers asking for the company's login credentials and other confidential details. Interestingly, these hackers target new employees or someone at the junior-level position.

"You'd be surprised how many people get on to us, just random Apple employees," an employee told Business Insider. "You get emails offering you thousands [of euros] to get a password to get access to Apple. I could sell my Apple ID login information online for EUR 20,000 (GBP 15,000 / $23,000) tomorrow. That's how much people are trying."

The employees also shared that Apple is aware of it, and maintains a program called 'Grow Your Own' to combat the issue. Your guess is as good as mine on why the program is named that way.

Hackers could be after details of individual accounts or get access to the intellectual property or company's planned strategies or product information. The employees told the publication that it doesn't really matter much as it is very difficult for anyone to get access to the company's offices. Apple is understandably alert at all times of any breach in its security.

In the past, we have seen employees, especially former staff that have utilised their power and level of access against the company. An ex-Microsoft employee was caught stealing trade secrets by the Redmond-based company.

Google Maps for Android Update Brings Navigation Tweaks and More

Google Maps for Android Update Brings Navigation Tweaks and More

Google Maps for Android received its first update of 2016 last month that added several new features including Driving mode and more. Now, there's a new update for Android users that brings new features including a tweaked navigation interface, and from other changes.

The new Google Maps for Android version 9.20 is currently not available on Google Play India but can be expected to be rolled out in the region soon. For those who can't wait for the new features can download the apk which is signed by Google via APK Mirror.

According to Android Police, the latest Maps version 9.20 for Android also brings some minor improvements such as adding a shortcut to the user Timeline to quickly add a place to the history.

One of the biggest improvements in the update is new signage that shows up on the Maps. The update will now show names of the streets and exits that you are supposed to turn to, instead of just showing the blue line. Another notable addition can be considered to be a setting to disable turn-by-turn instructions for voice navigation during an ongoing call. Earlier versions of Maps for Android unfortunately missed out the feature. Notably, the turn-by-turn voice navigation is enabled by default. Users can head to Settings > Navigation Settings > Play voice during phone calls, and turn off the setting.

Another addition is pairing a review with photos submitted by a user for the same location. The new feature will allow reviewers to express their experience with the help of images apart from the text. For those who have submitted reviews for a location and also submitted images of the same location will now see the images showing beneath the reviews.

The last Maps update added the 'intelligent' Driving mode which essentially utilised the user's location history and Web searches to provide traffic updates and ETA (estimated time of arrival). The new Driving mode feature was an optional feature in the new Maps update for Android. It could be enabled from a shortcut on the home screen and can also be turned on from the navigation drawer

Huawei Y6 Pro With 4000mAh Battery, 2GB of RAM Goes Official

Huawei has introduced the Y6 Pro smartphone, which is now listed on the company's official site. Unfortunately, there is no word on the pricing and availability of the Huawei Y6 Pro at the moment.

It's worth mentioning that the Y6 Pro has been listed only on the company's mobile site, hinting that it could be accidentally revealed.

The highlight of the Y6 Pro smartphone is its large 4000mAh battery that is rated to deliver up to 39 hours of talk time, and can last up to 24 hours with just 10 percent battery with the Smart Power Saving mode turned on. The Huawei Y6 Pro will be competing against various Android smartphones with the similar gigantic battery.

The dual-SIM Y6 Pro smartphone runs Android 5.1 Lollipop with company's Emotion UI 3.1 Lite skin on top. It comes with a 5-inch (720x1280 pixels) HD IPS display and is powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek (MT6735P) processor coupled with 2GB of RAM. It comes with 16GB of inbuilt storage while there is no word about expandable storage support. It sports a 13-megapixel rear autofocus camera with LED flash, while there is a secondary 5-megapixel front camera also on board.

On the connectivity front, the Huawei Y6 Pro offers 4G, 3G, GPRS/ EDGE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Micro-USB, and Bluetooth options. It measures 143.1x71.8x9.7mm and weighs 160 grams. It will be available in Gold, White, and Grey colours.

Last month, Huawei's Honor brand launched two new smartphones in India, the Honor 5X and Honor Holly 2 Plus. The Honor 5X was priced at Rs. 12,999 for the 2GB of RAM variant, while the Honor Holly 2 Plus was priced at Rs. 8,499.

WhatsApp for BlackBerry 10 OS Update Brings Web Link Previews and More

WhatsApp for BlackBerry 10 OS Update Brings Web Link Previews and More
WhatsApp, the Facebook-owned messaging service, has rolled out an update for its BB 10 OS app with some new features. The update pushes the app version to 2.12.340.2.
The changelog for the WhatsApp update includes added support for more Web client features such as Message info, recent emoji sync and more. It also brings the support for Web link previews on outgoing messages.
In addition to updated organisation of phone numbers on the contact information screen, the latest app version also removes some issues users faced during the message history backup process. Fix for connectivity issues via proxy servers along with other miscellaneous fixes and updates are also included. The updated app can be downloaded from the BlackBerry World app store.
WhatsApp last week silently pushed a server-side update to its app on Android and iOS that increases the number of users included in a group chat. Until now, a WhatsApp group chat could include up to 100 users. However, the update now pushes the limit to 256 users.
WhatsApp last month got rid of its $1 (approximately Rs. 68) annual subscription fee. Until now, WhatsApp asked some users to pay an annual fee for using the app after the first year of use - though as many of us experienced, most users were not asked to pay after a year, and instead were given extensions each year.
Apart from scrapping the annual fee, WhatsApp also revealed its upcoming plans where it wants people to connect with businesses and organisation directly.
Earlier this month the messaging company hit 1 billion monthly active user mark, levelling itself with Google's free email service, Gmail. As per the latest stats, WhatsApp witnesses 42 billion messages per day, 1.6 billion photos per day, 250 million videos per day, and has 1 billion groups.

Mobiles Purchased From Amazon India No Longer Eligible for Refunds

Mobile phones that are fulfilled by Amazon are no longer eligible for refund, as per a change made by Amazon India's return policy page on February 7. Buyers will no longer be able to return the mobile phones purchased on Amazon unless the item is damaged, missing, or defective, as per their new returns policy.

"All mobile phones that are fulfilled by Amazon, purchased on or after 7th February 2016, will have a replacement only policy. Mobile phone items that are fulfilled by Amazon will no longer be eligible for refunds," a statement posted on Amazon India's returns policy page states.

Users who have received a defective or a damaged mobile phone fulfilled by Amazon will be eligible for a free replacement within a period of 10 days of purchase. "In case you have received a defective or a damaged mobile phone that is fulfilled by Amazon, you will be eligible for a free replacement," Amazon states.

Mobiles Purchased From Amazon India No Longer Eligible for Refunds

The returns policy still applies to a broad variety of categories for a period ranging from 7 to 30 days after receiving the product, where consumers can return an item if they no longer need it. Amazon India also maintains a page of a dozen-odd categories where items are not eligible for a returns policy, ranging from baby and personal care products, jewellery, software, and video games.

In contrast, while Amazon is doing away with its returns policy for mobile phones, Flipkart in October last year introduced a returns policy that lets customers return a mobile phone if they are not satisfied with it within 10 days, refunding the entire amount paid by the customer, including shipping and gift wrapping charges. Products in the Fashion and Books categories, along with products sold by Flipkart Advantage sellers can be returned within 30 days of delivery. However, the returns policy does not apply to certain specific categories such as innerwear, lingerie, socks, and clothing.

Snapdeal users cannot just return an item if they are dissatisfied with it. Its 7-day returns policy, which applies to most categories, including mobile phones, states that a user can return the product if it was in the wrong colour, size, varies from description, is damaged or has missing parts or accessories. According to its terms and conditions, for electronic items, Snapdeal requires a document from the brand/OEM's service centre confirming that the delivered item was defective. "Returns/replacements will be accepted for only those items which are found to be faulty/ defective. We will carry out a quality check to validate the complaint before processing any request for refund/replacement," Snapdeal's return policy page states.

LeEco Le 1s review: Affordable premium smartphone that leaves a lasting impression

LeEco Le 1s review: Affordable premium smartphone that leaves a lasting impression

The competition in the smartphone is intense and companies are looking for new ways to attract consumers. LeEco is yet another Chinese tech company that made its India debut this month with Le 1s -- an affordable smartphone that challenges several premium phones in the market. Le 1s has got the design and the specs to become one of the bestsellers in India, a market with huge demand for feature-heavy budget-friendly devices.

We spent a few days with the LeEco Le 1s, which will be available in India for the first time in a flash sale Flipkart on 2 February, and here's what we think about. Need we remind the Le 1s is priced at Rs 10,999 and flaunts one of the best-in-class spec sheets out there. Let's look at the individual specs of Le 1s and whether if it's really worth the hype or not.

Design

LeEco Le 1s has a simple yet elegant design. The metal unibody made of aircraft-grade aluminium gives a sense of premium feeling when you are holding or even looking at it. The edge-to-edge display with ultra-slim bezels is yet another appeal and is truly impressive. Another key highlight of the Le 1s is the chambered edges that add to the looks.

LeEco Le 1s is available in just gold, while the company said at the launch that Le 1s comes in silver and grey hues as well. The gold Le 1s does not cease to impress as it has a unique shade to stand out in the crowd.

The key orientation is standard. Le 1s has the power button on the right side panel alongside the volume rocker controls and a SIM card tray appears on the left. A USB Type-C port and the speaker grilles are at the bottom of the handset and a 3.5mm headphone jack along with IR blaster appear on the top.

The rear side of the Le 1s features the fingerprint scanner, which has a mirror finish to add to the looks, and camera module on the top left corner.

LeEco Le 1s is overall a beautifully crafted with focus to smallest details such as no screws are visible anywhere on the device. The Le 1s measures 151.1 x 74.2 x 7.6mm and weighs 169 grams.

Display

As we noted in our quick review for the device highlighting the best specs Le 1s offers, the handset's display is visually appealing with good viewing angles. The Le 1s sports a 5.5-inch display has a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels with 403ppi, 80% NTSC colour gamut and 500nit brightness. The capacitive touch buttons at the bottom panel of the phone lights up when the screen is turned on.

LeEco Le 1s features a 13-megapixel primary camera with PDAF, ultra fast focus, ISOCELL 5P Lens, f/2.0 aperture and LED flash. On the front side of the device, we find a 5MP snapper with the same f/2.0 aperture and a wide-angle lens to capture larger landscape.

The camera UI is simple. The settings can be accessed by tapping the gear icon at the left bottom, the gallery can be accessed from the right bottom and swiping the screen switches camera modes between photo, panorama, video and slow-motion video. At the top right corner, you can access various filter and a drawer just above the capture button lets you switch to HDR, Night, Scene and Square options. The camera settings allow further customisations with ISO, Contrast, White Balance, Exposure, Sharpness and Saturation.

LeEco Le 1s has really impressed us with the performance. The interface is very smooth without any lags. Playing power-consuming games did not affect the device's performance and multi-tasking was handled with ease.

The Le 1s is powered by a 2.2GHzv64-bit octa-core MediaTek Helio X10 processor with CorePilot 2.0 optimised for gaming, which explains the smooth performance. There's a 3GB RAM and the device runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop-based eUi, which is intuitive and responsive. The handset's home screen houses all the apps in different pages, which can be accessed by swiping left. The shortcuts to main settings, which are usually in the notifications area, can be accessed by tapping the capacitive menu button.

LeEco Le 1s Review
When the device is locked, the users can access the quick menu by simply tapping the menu option. The notification drawer looks a lot like an iPhone's control center.

LeEco Le 1s Review
We also ran benchmarking tests to see the Le 1s' true potential and the results were impressive. Check out the screenshots of the benchmark test results below:

LeEco Le 1s Review: Benchmark test results
As most metal smartphones have in common, Le 1s also heats up after extensive gaming or continuous video playback. But the heating does not reach an unbearable point, which is commendable.

Battery

LeEco claimed Le 1s delivers 3.5 hours of talk time with just 5 minutes of charge. The handset must be applauded for its quick charging capabilities, which we found intriguing. The USB Type-C port may have a major role to play in it, a feature usually found in flagship smartphones. The users will love the fast charging capabilities of the Le 1s, and the discharging levels were well balanced.

The Le 1s has different modes to extend the battery life. The smart power saving mode controls features such vibration and network sync based on the scenario to limit unwanted background activity. This feature helped us push through the day with average usage. Super Power Saving mode limits dynamic visuals and lastly, the ultra-long standby time allows basic apps such as calling and messaging.

The users can rely on the battery of the Le 1s and the quick charging capability will provide adequate juice to keep you going in urgent situations.

Fingerprint sensor

LeEco boasts Le 1s to feature world's first mirror-surfaced fingerprint sensor and we were equally impressed by how accurately and swiftly it can unlock the device. The sensor can authenticate the registered fingerprint from any angle. The device rarely failed to recognise the registered fingerprint and it is safe to say the accuracy levels were at par with the company's claim of 99.3 percent or at least close.

LeEco Le 1s has decent sound quality, which is clearly audible in closed rooms but gets faint in noisy environment. LeEco said the handset's speakers have Dolby and DTS sound setup for the clarity. When we tested the in-ear headphone sound quality (using LeEco's all-metal in-ear headphones), the sound quality was excellent and well balanced.

Verdict

LeEco Le 1s, in our view, is one of the worthiest smartphones one can buy in the market right now. Its biggest competitors are Lenovo K4 Note and Huawei Honor 5X. Le 1s is not only the cheapest among them, but it also offers equal or sometimes better specs. The key highlights of the Le 1s based on our review are the design, performance and battery. The camera could be better in the Le 1s, but it serves the purpose for most (daylight shots are great). Fingerprint sensor and the USB Type-C ports are just the added benefits that make Le 1s future-proof.

At Rs 10,999, Le 1s has the potential to be one of the most innovative smartphones in the affordable smartphone range.

Delhi District Courts to Be Wi-Fi Enabled in 3-4 Months: Firefly CEO

Delhi District Courts to Be Wi-Fi Enabled in 3-4 Months: Firefly CEO

All six district courts in Delhi will have Wi-Fi facility in the next 3-4 months.
Firefly, a joint venture firm of Airtel and Vodafone, has received the order to install Wi-Fi at the district courts in the national capital.
"Following the leadership shown by the Supreme Court of India and Delhi High Court to digitally enable their premise, all district courts in Delhi are now working intensively to provide similar services on their premise," Firefly CEO Raj Sethia told PTI.
The company in January-end commissioned Wi-Fi at Delhi High Court.
Speaking on the time-frame for the Wi-Fi roll out at the district courts, Sethia said, "This is expected to be operational over the next 3-4 months."
With the launch of this facility people would have access to the Internet via Wi-Fi in all public areas of the courts including chamber blocks, lobbies and corridors of the court room buildings, cafeteria, bar rooms and the library.
The six district courts in Delhi are Tis Hazari, Patiala House, Karkardooma, Rohini, Dwarka and Saket.
While Airtel and Vodafone customers can opt paying for Wi-Fi data service from their existing packages, others can buy time-based usage vouchers or data limit based vouchers ranging from Rs. 20 to Rs. 270.
This facility would also be available on the non-sim card devices, such as laptops that are Wi-Fi compatible

Vulnerabilities in Font Processing Library Impact Firefox, Linux: Report

Vulnerabilities in Font Processing Library Impact Firefox, Linux: Report

Security researchers have found vulnerabilities in Graphite, also known as Libgraphite font processing library, that affects a number of systems. The vulnerabilities, if exploited, allow an attacker to seed malicious fonts to a machine. The Libgraphite library is utilised by Linux, Thunderbird, WordPad, Firefox, OpenOffice, as well as several other major platforms and applications.

Security researchers from Cisco have posted an advisory to outline four vulnerabilities in the Libgraphite font processing library. One of the vulnerabilities allows the attackers to execute arbitrary code on the machine, and among other things, crash the system.

Two of the vulnerabilities can result in denial of service situations. "An attacker simply needs the user to run a Graphite-enabled application that renders a page using a specially crafted font that triggers one of these vulnerabilities," the team wrote in a blog post.

The vulnerabilities impact Firefox 11 and later versions and many other aforementioned apps and services that support Graphite. "Since Mozilla Firefox 11 and later versions directly support Graphite, the attacker could easily compromise a server and then serve the specially crafted font when the user renders a page from the server (since Graphite supports both local and server-based fonts)." To recall, Firefox included Graphite by default in 2012.

Besides the large range of devices that are impacted, the vulnerabilities are also concerning because it is quite easy for attackers to get hold of a machine. A user can unknowingly visit a malicious website and get affected. Mozilla, and various Linux distributions are yet to address the issue.

MIT Builds Low-Power Artificial Intelligence Chip for Smartphones

MIT Builds Low-Power Artificial Intelligence Chip for Smartphones

A team of US researchers has built an energy-friendly chip that can perform powerful artificial intelligence (AI) tasks, enabling future mobile devices to implement "neural networks" modelled on the human brain.

The team from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) developed a new chip designed specifically to implement neural networks.

It is 10 times as efficient as a mobile GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) so it could enable mobile devices to run powerful AI algorithms locally rather than uploading data to the Internet for processing.

The GPU is a specialised circuit designed to accelerate the image output in a frame buffer intended for output to a display.

Modern smartphones are equipped with advanced embedded chipsets that can do many different tasks depending on their programming.

GPUs are an essential part of those chipsets and as mobile games are pushing the boundaries of their capabilities, the GPU performance is becoming increasingly important.

Neural nets were widely studied in the early days of artificial intelligence research, but by the 1970s, they had fallen out of favour. In the past decade, however, they have come back under the name "deep learning."

"Deep learning is useful for many applications such as object recognition, speech and face detection," said Vivienne Sze, assistant professor in MIT's department of electrical engineering and computer science, in a MIT statement.

The new chip, which the researchers dubbed "Eyeriss," can also help usher in the "Internet of things" - the idea that vehicles, appliances, civil-engineering structures, manufacturing equipment, and even livestock would have sensors that report information directly to networked servers, aiding with maintenance and task coordination.

With powerful AI algorithms on board, networked devices could make important decisions locally, entrusting only their conclusions, rather than raw personal data, to the Internet.

The team presented their findings at the "International Solid State Circuits Conference" in San Francisco recently.

At the conference, the MIT researchers used "Eyeriss" to implement a neural network that performs an image-recognition task. It was for the first time that a state-of-the-art neural network has been demonstrated on a custom chip.

"This work is very important, showing how embedded processors for deep learning can provide power and performance optimizations that will bring these complex computations from the cloud to mobile devices," explained Mike Polley, senior vice president at Samsung's mobile processor innovations lab.

Tactical Laser Pointer

Meetings are a little like the wild west around ThinkGeek World Domination HQ. Agendas are a foreign concept, apparently ditched because they were "too corporate." Frequently the single person whose buy-in you need shuffles in, with some apology about an important conference call, just as everyone's getting up to leave, and you get to have the meeting a second time. And don't even get us started about the people who can crunch their food loudly enough to drown out the person who's speaking. That's some srs mastication skillz right there.

For when you need to take charge of meetings, we offer the Tactical Laser Pointer. With a black matte body, it slips into your pocket or onto your belt without anyone being the wiser. Break it out in the middle of a long meeting to wake everybody up. Use it to point out the one thing on the chart that everyone's avoiding talking about.
