Tesla Sees Drop in April Registrations in California as Model S Demand Softens

Tesla Sees Drop in April Registrations in California as Model S Demand Softens

Registrations of Tesla vehicles in California, by far the largest market of the luxury electric car maker, fell 24 percent in April from a year ago, according to data from IHS Markit. The findings come as investors worry that demand for Tesla's luxury Model S sedan is waning ahead of the mass market Model 3 launch.
Tesla earlier this week reported first-half global deliveries of its Model S and its Model X SUV at the low end of its own forecast, driving down the stock and raising questions about demand for the older models.
Tesla's share price more than doubled between early December and late June as investors bet on Chief Executive Elon Musk's strategy to transform the low-volume luxury electric car maker into a diversified producer of mass market vehicles, storage batteries, electric commercial trucks and rooftop solar panels. The company's market value rose past larger rivals General Motors and Ford Motor.
Since June 23, however, Tesla shares have fallen by nearly 20 percent amid concerns that demand for the company's existing models is weakening.
Overall sales of electric vehicles in the United States remain stuck at less than 1 percent of total vehicle sales, despite a growing number of models fielded by Tesla and other car makers.
Tesla declined to comment on California registration figures and noted that second-quarter global deliveries rose 53 percent from a year earlier, to just over 12,000 Model S and just over 10,000 Model X. It said earlier this week that battery pack production problems held back vehicle output in the second quarter until early June.
California, a haven for environmentalists and techies, is one of the company's leading markets. The company does not break out results by geographic area.
IHS analyst Stephanie Brinley cautioned that a single month of data could not fully explain Tesla demand. "If Tesla had an issue with its production for the month, that could explain" the drop in registrations, she said, noting in particular the problems with battery pack output. Still, she said, Tesla's Model S, launched in 2012, could be in need of a refresh.
"They haven't changed much on the exterior or much on the package," and it is a high-fashion car, she said. "I can certainly understand where Model S sales may be softening a little bit because it's an older product. That could be contributing to the issue."
Industry data reviewed separately by Reuters showed that the Model S registrations in California were uneven over the first four months of 2017, varying by more than 1,000 units month-to-month. In percentage terms Model S growth peaked in February, decelerated in March and turned negative in April in California.
Brinley said it was difficult to assess whether that reflected demand or availability.
IHS measures vehicle registration, which comes after a sale. Registration in California and overall in the United States rose sharply for the combined first four months of the year, but April showed steep declines. IHS has not released data for May or June.
Chief Executive Musk in May stoked concerns that the Model 3 would cannibalize demand for the Model S when he told investors that some "confused" Tesla buyers regarded the new Model 3 as an upgrade to the Model S, affecting Model S orders. The new car is a $35,000 mass market vehicle, which costs about half the price of the Model S.
Tesla reported first-half 2017 global deliveries rose to 47,100 in 2017. Tesla had predicted 47,000 to 50,000. Musk in May said there would be demand for 100,000 luxury Teslas.
IHS reported April Tesla registrations fell to 2,177 from 2,867 in California. Nationally they dropped nearly 10 percent to 3,911 from 4,334. For the first four months, California registrations rose to 6,926 from 5,804 and US registrations rose to 15,288 from 10,937.
Tesla shares fell 5.6 percent to close at $308.83 on Thursday, although the stock is up about 45 percent for the year to date.

At Apple's New Headquarters, Price Is No Object

At Apple's New Headquarters, Price Is No Object

At Apple's New Headquarters, Price Is No Object

Do you remember the NeXT computer, the one Steve Jobs began building in 1985 after he was booted from Apple by then-Chief Executive John Sculley and the board?
It was supposed to be a machine built for academia, the ultimate learning tool priced so that universities could buy them in bulk. But, Jobs being Jobs, he had particular ideas about what it should look like and how it should be made.
It had to be a perfect cube, which created manufacturing complications. The screws inside the computer required expensive plating. His engineers designed custom chips instead of using off-the-shelf semiconductors. He built a futuristic factory to manufacture the computer, which included, as Walter Isaacson recounts in his biography of Jobs, "$20,000 black leather chairs and a custom-made staircase, just as in the corporate headquarters."
The result was exactly what you'd expect: a beautiful machine that colleges couldn't possibly afford. Jobs's higher education advisers had told him the cost needed to be $2,000 to $3,000. When it was launched in October 1988, all the bells and whistles brought the price to $6,500. I thought of the NeXT computer when I read in the New York Times recently that Apple's new headquarters building in Cupertino, California - its official name is Apple Park; unofficially it's "the spaceship" - cost an astonishing $5 billion. That makes it the world's third most expensive modern building at the time of completion (after the Abraj Al Bait, a skyscraper hotel complex in Mecca, and the Marina Bay Sands, a casino and entertainment center in Singapore).
A Google search unearthed the news that when the complex was originally designed in 2011, it was supposed to cost a little under $3 billion. That would have made it more expensive than the headquarters of Goldman Sachs, which was built in 2009 for $2.1 billion, but less than the rebuilt World Trade Center, at $3.9 billion.
And while Apple was said to be looking for ways to cut costs before construction began, that clearly didn't happen. Why? For the same reason that the NeXT computer cost $6,500: because Jobs, whose design ideas were central to Apple Park, insisted on aesthetic touches that would make the building a) unique and beautiful and b) more costly.
In mid-May, Steven Levy of Wired got an early look at Apple Park and noted some of these Jobsian touches. "The stone for the exterior of the Fitness and Wellness center was sourced from a quarry in Kansas, and then distressed, like a pair of jeans, to make it look like the stone at Jobs's favorite hotel in Yosemite," one caption noted. Another explained, "For workers who want to take the cafe's pizza back to their pods, Apple created (and patented) a container that lets air and moisture escape so the crust won't get soggy."
According to one of the architects, when Jobs talked about the material for the walls "he knew exactly what kind of timber he wanted, but not just 'I like oak' or 'I like maple.' He knew it had to be quarter-cut. It had to be cut in the winter, ideally in January, to have the least amount of sap and sugar content."
The staircases are "a lightweight concrete that achieves the perfect white, and they have unusual banisters that seem carved from the wall alongside the stairs," Levy reported.
The sliding glass doors for the cafe are 85 feet by 54 feet.
And so on.
Could Apple afford a $5 billion headquarters? Of course. As of early May, the company had more than $250 billion in cash on hand. And although it's certainly true that building an extravagant headquarters can sometimes mark the moment that a company peaks, in a pride-cometh-before-the-fall kind of way - am I right, Theranos? - I hesitate to suggest such a fate for Apple. I thought Jobs's death would mark Apple's top, and the company has added, oh, only about $400 billion in market cap since then.
What Apple Park suggests, though, is that the company hasn't yet moved beyond its founder. That has both upside and downside.
"Could we have cut corners here and there?" Cook said to Levy. "It wouldn't have been Apple. And it wouldn't have sent the message to everybody working here that detail matters, that care matters."
But it also sends a message that money is no object, that every design whim can be indulged, even if it drives the cost up, and that the Steve Jobs way remains the only way.
Still and all, let's congratulate Apple on its new headquarters. I'm sure it's worth every penny.

Best Phones Under Rs. 10,000: Which is the Best Mobile in Under-10000 Segment?

Best Phones Under Rs. 10,000: Which is the Best Mobile in Under-10000 Segment?

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Xiaomi Redmi 4 is a worthy successor to the Redmi 3S Prime
  • The Yu Yureka Black is another good mobile under Rs. 10,000
  • The Lenovo K6 Power remains a solid choice as well
Although the news is often dominated by the latest flagship phones because that's where the most innovation is happening, when it's time to actually buy a phone, most of us are still looking in the under Rs. 10,000 category. It's also one of the categories that sees relatively fast turnover in picks, as a lot of mobiles are released in this price range. In the under Rs. 10,000 category, we've added a few phones that weren't there in our last roundup, and there's a notable exit as well. If you're looking to buy a mobile under Rs. 10,000, then these are the absolute best options you have right now.
As always, we've stuck to phones that we've put through our detailed review process, since we can't vouch for quality of phones based on just their specifications. We've also avoided mobiles that are over a year old, as, especially in the sub-Rs. 10,000 price bracket, things tend to change for the better pretty quickly.
Here are our top picks (in no particular order) that all fight it out to be the best phone under Rs. 10,000, along with a few other phones worth checking out.

Best phones under Rs. 10,000

Mobile under Rs. 10,000Gadgets 360 rating
Xiaomi Redmi 48/10
Yu Yureka Black8/10
Lenovo K6 Power8/10
Moto G47/10
Coolpad Note 3S7/10

1. Xiaomi Redmi 4
Replacing the Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime, which was one of the strongest picks through much of last year, we now have the Xiaomi Redmi 4, which is also a good pick if your budget is under Rs. 10,000.
Our review rated the 3GB/ 32GB variant of the phone 8 on 10 which is really good for a phone at this price point, and the new phone has really good battery life and a sleek and compact design. The camera is disappointing, but it's a problem that even the best phones under the Rs. 10,000 price must live with. If you're looking for a value for money phone, then the Xiaomi Redmi 4 is a solid pick.

2. Yu Yureka Black
Yu had a bit of a slow year last year as it wasn't prepared for the fast adoption of 4G, but it's back now and the Yu Yureka Black is a pretty good choice for a good phone under Rs. 10,000. Its display is a little disappointing, but it does well on other fronts, and is a good value for money phone.

The Yu Yureka Black looks good, and has solid battery life and good overall performance, so if you're looking for a good all-rounder, this phone is a pretty good option in the sub-Rs. 10,000 price bracket.

3. Lenovo K6 Power
One of the best phones from the last year at this price point, the Lenovo K6 Power is still a good choice if you're looking for a phone for less than Rs. 10,000, with performance that's still good enough, and excellent battery life.

The display and camera are also rated very well, but the baseline has shifted up a little since it launched so although it's still a good phone, it's not head and shoulders above the others mentioned here, despite what the numbers might suggest. That being said, it's still a pretty good pick, and it also recently received an update to Android Nougat, making it more value for money than others which are still using Marshmallow. Plus, it's a lot easier to get your hands on than some of the others on the list.

4. Moto G4
Available at just under Rs. 10,000, the Moto G4 is another good mobile with a disappointing camera, which is a common complaint at this price. However, it has a good display and decent performance, and it's also a good looking device.
Battery life and Motorola's UI are additional selling points, but the lack of a fingerprint sensor has moved from a minor inconvenience to a telling fault over the months since its launch, as most phones under Rs. 10,000 have started to add this feature.
5. Coolpad Note 3S
The Coolpad Note 3S also released near the end of 2016, and it remains a good all-round pick, thanks to its unique looks and good camera (in daylight conditions).
Relatively weak battery life and middling performance keep it from the top of the list, but there's not so much of a difference either, so if you like the design and the UI, then this phone might also be a good phone for less than Rs. 10,000.

Other picks
These five phones are our top picks fighting it out to be the best phone under Rs. 10,000, but apart from these, there are a few other phones that you can consider. Looking at older phones, the Micromax Canvas 6 Pro is not a bad choice - it comes with a good amount of RAM, but the battery life and camera are a letdown, and the phone also heats up, so it didn't make the main list.
Two sub-Rs. 10,000 phones we haven't reviewed yet, but liked during quick impressions are the Lyf F1s, the Moto C Plus, which launched in December, and May respectively. Both phones have good overall specifications, and the Moto C Plus in particular has really great pricing. The Nokia 3 is another decent addition that looks good on paper, but we can't recommend it because we haven't reviewed it, yet.
These are our latest picks for phones under Rs. 10,000 - if you think we've missed a good pick that others should know about, let us know via the comments.

Nokia 3310 (2017) said to release on April 28
The Nokia 3310 (2017) has certainly been the Nokia phone that has grabbed the most attention and headlines than others since the company announced its comeback, and now it seems like it will be made available later this month. The device's pre-order listings for Germany and Austria have tipped a release date of April 28. iPhone 8 leaked images tip conflicting designs
Apple is set to launch an anniversary edition iPhone alongside the iterative updates this September and now, few live images of a purported iPhone 8 dummy model have been leaked by tipster Benjamin Geskin shed light on its design. These images indicate that it will sport a glass back with 2.5D curved glass and a vertical dual camera setup. The front is also all glass, with no bezel visible. There is also no fingerprint scanner at the back, and no Home Button in the front, indicating that the fingerprint scanner could indeed be embedded underneath the display.
The tipster also states that the iPhone 8 will sport dual front cameras as well - a first for the series if true - and will be 7.1mm thin. Geskin also notes that the camera bump is still visible, and is not flushed as expected.
RCom-Aircel merger gets shareholders' approval
Reliance Communications (RCom) has received 99.99 percent shareholders approval for merger of its wireless business with Aircel, a company statement said in New Delhi on Monday. It was also approved by shareholders of RTL at their meeting held on Monday pursuant to the order of the NCLT, the statement from the company added. The shareholders of Aircel have also approved the said scheme at their meeting held on April 22, 2017, convened under the order of the NCLT.
Vodafone's new international roaming pack offers unlimited calls and data in three countries
Vodafone India on Monday unveiled a new international roaming pack, called Vodafone i-Roam FREE. It offers "home-like tariffs while roaming in 47 countries," and offers free unlimited calls and high-speed data in the US, UAE, and Singapore - in other countries, pack users will get incoming calls free, while data will be chargeable at Re. 1 per MB and outgoing calls at Re. 1 per minute.
The Vodafone i-Roam FREE pack is available in four denominations. A Rs. 500 pack is valid for 24 hours, a Rs. 2,500 pack is valid for 7 days, a Rs. 3,500 pack is valid for 10 days, while a Rs. 5,000 pack is valid for 30 days.
Samsung Galaxy S8's Bixby button can now be remapped
Soon after the launch of Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smartphones, it was found that the dedicated Bixby button on the devices could be reconfigured and Samsung wasn't helping when it blocked a remapping workaround by pushing out an update. Now, the Bixby Button Remapper app on Android, as the name suggests, allows users to remap the dedicated physical Bixby button to launch most of the services on the device. Notably, the app is able to remap the button to launch the camera app, flashlight, power menu, and even Google Now among others, but doesn't seem to be capable of launching Google Assistant as of now.
Some early adopters of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ also complained about a red-tint issue on the display. Now, Samsung has said that a software update would fix the problem by allowing users to readjust colours over a wider range than at present.
Apple CEO threatened to drop Uber's app over iPhone tagging
If a new in-depth report is to be believed, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick was once warned by Apple CEO Tim Cook for not following the App Store guidelines, even threatening that the Uber app would be kicked out of the App Store. A New York Times report says that Kalanick met Cook early in 2015 at Apple's headquarters, and was pulled up for the app's ability to persistently identify iPhone devices in a process called "fingerprinting", which violated Apple's privacy guidelines. Contradicting the New York Times report, Uber has told Engadget that it "absolutely" does not track individual users after they've deleted the app.
Gionee M6S Plus with 6GB of RAM and 6020mAh battery launched

The pricing for the phone starts from CNY 3,499 (roughly Rs. 32,800) and goes up to CNY 4,299 (roughly Rs. 40,200) for the 256GB storage variant. It has gone up for bookings, with the first sale on May 2.

The device has been leaked by TechnoBuffalo this time, and it shows the back, front and side of the phone. All in all, the Moto Z2 Play looks a lot like its powerhouse predecessor Moto Z Play, except for probably the Home Button design. The phone also has the connected pins at the back bringing support for Moto Mods.
TCL launches new VR Goggles for its 562 smartphone in India

uTorrent will soon be available in your Web browser, says BitTorrent founder
While online piracy has faced some setbacks in the past few years, it seems like Web pirates now have something new to look forward toBitTorrent creator Bram Cohen said that the "new revision" of the uTorrent client will run in user's default browser and will provide a "nicer experience" than the current version, as per a report by TorrentFreak. However, it seems that the company realises that pushing out such a major change to the torrent client can easily back-fire if users do not react to it positively. This is why the transition to browser will be pushed out widely only after receiving feedback from users.
Microsoft tipped to take on Chromebooks at May 2 event
Microsoft is set to host a special software and hardware event on May 2 and a fresh leak seems to give clarity on what may be launched at the event. The Redmond-based giant is looking to unveil its Windows 10 Cloud software - a more metered down OS targeted at students - and is also expected to launch a device running on the previously rumoured Windows 10 Cloud platform, in a bid to beat Chromebooks at its own game.
Windows Central has leaked a screenshot of minimum specifications required for a device running on Windows 10 Cloud, which includes a quad-core Celeron (or better) processor, 4GB of RAM, and 32GB or 64GB of storage. Optional pen or touch support is also included.
