Today's Story Highlights

Clinton Campaign Latest Target of Hackers Linked to Russia
The campaign of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is the
latest possible victim of a series of hack attacks some cybersecurity
experts have linked to the Russian government. Campaign officials
reportedly acknowledged that an analytics program it uses, which is
maintained by the DNC, was accessed in a breach discovered earlier this
month.

KeySniffer Follows the Scent of Cheap Wireless Keyboards
A vulnerability in inexpensive wireless keyboards lets hackers steal
private data, Bastille reported this week. The vulnerability lets
hackers use a new attack the firm dubbed "KeySniffer" to eavesdrop on
and capture every keystroke typed from up to 250 feet away. The stolen
data is rendered in clear text. It lets hackers search for victims'
credit card information, passwords and more.

Trump Tries to Walk Back Comments on Clinton Emails
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Thursday attempted to
walk back some of his remarks at a Wednesday morning press briefing
during the Democratic National Convention, including his suggestion that
Russian intelligence services should look for more than 30,000 deleted
emails belonging to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and reveal
them to the world.

LinuxInsider Review of Solus Simplicity
The Solus Project version 1.2 shows considerable maturity in the
homegrown Budgie desktop. Solus 1.2 is the second minor release in the
Shannon series, built around a custom Budgie desktop developed in-house
and the eopkg package manager forked from PiSi. Solus is a Linux
distribution built from scratch. The Budgie desktop can be set to
emulate the look and feel of the GNOME 2 desktop.

Xiaomi Unveils Budget-Friendly MacBook Air Rival
Xiaomi on Wednesday unveiled the Mi Notebook Air, its challenger to the
MacBook Air. The 13.3-inch model is priced at about $750, compared to
the MacBook Air's $1,050 price tag in China. The device is also
available in a 12.5-inch version. The Mi Notebook Air offers a number of
features that aren't available in a MacBook Air. The 13.3-inch model is
gaming-ready.

BlackBerry Offers Android Users a Secure New Smartphone
BlackBerry on Tuesday made a play for security-conscious Android users
with the announcement of its new DTEK50. Running Android 6.0 Marshmallow
and BlackBerry security software, the new unit is the "most secure
Android smartphone" in the world, the company claimed. Many Android
users have concerns about the their phone's security, according to a
recent survey.

New Office 365 Features Help Build a Better Research Paper
Microsoft on Tuesday announced a slew of cloud-powered intelligent
services in Office 365 apps that aim to assist research and writing
efforts. Researcher lets users access the Bing Knowledge Graph to find
and incorporate sources and content for research papers without leaving
Word. Editor uses machine learning and national language processing,
combined with input from Microsoft's linguists.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/83743.html

Gadget Ogling: Pretty Printers, Bargain Smartwatches, and Font Finders
Paper, designed by Ludwig Rensch, is sadly a concept for now. It holds a
ream of paper to make loading the printing material easier than
shuffling with a stack of loose leafs. It can scan documents and send
them to your phone if you desire. It can make copies. There's a string
of LEDs to show how much ink is left for each color, and there's even a
handle on top .
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/83739.html

Google Beefs Up Phone App's Spam-Fighting Skills
Google on Tuesday released an updated version of its Phone app for
Android with a new spam protection feature that warns users when an
incoming call is likely to be spam. It also lets them block numbers and
report spam. The app is available on Google Play. The spam warning
feature works on Nexus and AndroidOne devices on the T-Mobile USA,
Project Fi and Orange France networks.

Aquila Test Flight Carries Facebook's Internet Ambitions Aloft
Facebook has carried out the first full-scale test flight of Aquila, a
high-altitude solar-powered unmanned aircraft designed to provide
Internet access to remote regions. The company had flown a one-fifth
scale version of the airplane for several months. The full-sized craft
has the wingspan of a Boeing 737 -- 46 yards -- but reportedly weighs
less than 900 pounds fully laden.

FBI Launches Probe Into DNC Email Hack
The FBI on Monday confirmed it has opened an investigation into
allegations that the Wikileaks email dump of nearly 20,000 DNC emails
over the weekend might be linked to the Russian government. Hackers
connected to Russian intelligence agencies allegedly have been working
to help tilt the U.S. presidential election. "The FBI is investigating a
cyber intrusion involving the DNC," the agency said.

Today's Story Highlights

The Wonderful, Worrisome World of Self-Driving Cars
There seem to be warning stickers for everything. There may soon be a
new sticker for the autonomous car era: "Warning: Self-Driving Cars Get
Hacked." Despite all the positive news about self-driving cars, there is
a darker side to this story that's very important. It's one that can be
particularly frightening if you happen to be riding in an autonomous car
when it gets hacked.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/83751.html

Public-Private Team Leads Assault on Ransomware
Ransomware has become a scourge on the Internet -- but two information
security companies, along with a pair of law enforcement agencies, this
week launched an initiative to do something about it. No More Ransom is
the centerpiece of a collaborative effort involving Kapersky Lab, Intel
Security, the Dutch National Police and Europol. The new portal aims to
educate the public about ransomware.

Oracle Hauls In NetSuite
Oracle has inked an agreement to acquire NetSuite -- the company its
former chief marketing officer, Zach Nelson, cofounded in 1998 -- for
$9.3 billion. NetSuite offers various software packages as cloud-based
services, including ERP, accounting, CRM and sales force automation.
What's surprising about the deal is "why it took so long and why Oracle
paid so much," said analyst Trip Chowdhry.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/83749.html

Apple Earnings Sag on Lower iPhone Price Points
Apple on Tuesday reported lower earnings in the third-quarter as the
global saturation of smartphones continued to put pressure on its core
iPhone business. However, officials remained upbeat. The company
reported stronger-than-expected metrics and has been able to grow its
software and services business while expanding into key overseas
markets. Apple reported net income of $7.8 billion.

Nintendo's Q1 Reflects Struggles Unrelated to Pokemon Go Success
Nintendo shares fell sharply in Tokyo on Wednesday, following its
release of a first-quarter earnings report that disappointed analyst
expectations. The company reported a drop of 31 percent in net sales and
an operating loss of about $48 million, which it attributed to growing
strength in the Japanese yen but which likely had more to do with dismal
sales of the Wii U, which it is phasing out.

Xactly CEO Christopher Cabrera: Understanding CRM's Boundaries
It's important to recognize that "CRM is growing up," said Xactly CEO
Christopher Cabrera. "It's becoming more useful to the CRM user, who is
predominantly the sales rep or whoever is managing the customer
relationship. The sales performance management, or SPM, space is on a
collision course with CRM, because what CRM doesn't do is allow the reps
that are using it to make sense of it all ... ."

KickassTorrents Owner Faces 20-Plus Years in Stir
Polish authorities last week arrested the alleged owner of pirate
website KickassTorrents, or KAT, 30-year-old Artem Vauln of Kharkiv,
Ukraine. Vaulin faces charges in the United States of conspiracy to
commit criminal copyright infringement, criminal copyright infringement
and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Conspiracy to commit money
laundering is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/83734.html

Gamification's Serious Role in Sales Success
When gamification was just starting to catch on several years ago, I
recall sitting next to the CMO of my then-company at a Gartner
conference session. The presenter walked the audience through the
concept of using ideas borrowed from gaming as a motivational tool, and
about two-thirds of the way through, the CMO turned to me and whispered,
"This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen."

Amazon Sidles Into Student Loans
Amazon has teamed up with Wells Fargo Educational Financial Services to
offer Amazon Prime Students a 0.5 percent discount on private student
loan interest rates, Wells Fargo announced last week. Wells Fargo is the
largest private student lender in the United States among commercial
banks. The Amazon discount can be added to the 0.25 percent discount
rate Wells Fargo already offers for enrolling in an automatic monthly
loan repayment plan.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/83736.html

Yahoo Deal Could Put Verizon in Google and Facebook's League
Verizon has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Yahoo's
operating business for approximately $4.83 billion in cash. The deal,
which comes on the heels of Verizon's $4.4 billion AOL purchase last
year, will allow it to expand its digital advertising business. The
purchase will provide Verizon with Yahoo's ad tech tools, search, email
and messenger assets.
