Today's Story Highlights
Fed Cloud Spending on Perplexing - but Upward - Trajectory
U.S. government agencies have spent more on cloud configurations than
official budgets have predicted -- and those agencies will pick up the
pace of cloud spending over the next five years. Federal agencies will
significantly boost spending on deployments with various "as a service"
configurations, according to two reports. However, they differ on the
components used in the forecasting process.

Facebook May Launch Risky Messenger Ad Program
Facebook has been preparing to push personalized ads through its
Messenger app, according to a report last week. The company will allow
brands to send their own marketing materials through the popular chat
app, suggests a leaked document apparently intended for Facebook's
advertising partners. The changes could go into effect during the second
quarter of the year.

Twitter Puts Some Eggs in Customer Service Basket
Twitter last week announced two tools designed to help businesses
improve their customer service capabilities. One product would allow
users to move from sending companies tweets to using Direct Messages,
according to product manager Ian Cairns. Companies will be able to embed
on their sites a Direct Messages link that would allow customers to send
information directly.

Battle Lines Sharpen in Apple-FBI Encryption Fight
In the days following the court order directing Apple to help the FBI
unlock an encrypted iPhone associated with the San Bernardino
terrorists, supporters have lined up behind both sides. A federal
magistrate last week ordered Apple to create software that would let
authorities access data in an iPhone used by the shooters in the attack
last year. Apple CEO Tim Cook responded with an open letter in defense
of the company's resistance.

Yahoo Sets Itself Up for Buyout
Yahoo on Friday announced that it has hired banking advisers and formed
a committee to explore its strategic alternatives, the latest indication
that it's serious about pursuing a possible sale. The committee, along
with advisers Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan Chase and PJT Partners, will
identify and recommend to the board transactions that it deems
beneficial to employees and shareholders.
