Today's Story Highlights

Amazon Throws Shade at Apple Defection Reports
Apple has shifted a portion of its cloud services business from Amazon
Web Services to the Google Cloud Platform, according to reports
published this week. The company maintained a smaller presence with AWS,
as well as its existing relationship with Microsoft Azure. It reportedly
is spending $400 million to $600 million under the cloud services
agreement.

Apple Loses Video Over IP Patent Scuffle in Germany
A German court on Wednesday determined that Apple had infringed a patent
owned by the Kudelski Group's OpenTV division. Apple products sold in
Germany can't use streaming technology that infringes OpenTV's patents,
the court reportedly ruled. The suit was brought in 2014 in Düsseldorf
District Court over three patents held by OpenTV and its sister company,
Nagra.

Instagram's New Algorithm Promises Most Favorable Sorting
Instagram on Tuesday announced plans to dump chronological posts in
favor of algorithmic recommendations. Users miss about 70 percent of the
content that flows through their feeds, which the company attributed to
its growth and its system for ordering content. The new algorithm, which
will begin rolling out in the coming months, will weigh the content by
relevancy to the user.

Apple Channels Founding Fathers in Legal Brief
Lawyers for Apple on Tuesday argued in a federal District Court filing
that the founding fathers would be appalled by the demands the
Department of Justice has made in seeking a backdoor to iPhone
encryption. The DoJ and the FBI want "Apple to create exactly the kind
of operating system that Congress has thus far refused to require," the
lawyers wrote.

Does Little iPhone Mean Apple Is Growing Up?
Every few months, fans gather with excitement to see what Apple will
introduce next -- so what can we expect to see from Apple on March 21? I
think the most important thing will be fixing a mistake the company made
two years ago. Apple will reintroduce a 4-inch iPhone. As smartphone
sales slow, even Apple needs to cozy up to users. Slapping them in the
face was not a good sales tactic.

A Future Without Work?
Periodically, a blatantly silly idea gains currency, spreading
throughout society, and it has one of two effects: Either it scares the
heck out of people, or they become enraptured with its seeming
plausibility. Last week, The New York Times published a piece set as a
dialog between two economics writers, titled, "A Future Without Jobs?" I
thought it fell into the silly category.

Amazon May Let You Pay With a Wink and a Nod
Amazon has applied for a patent for selfie-based authentication for
online purchases, according to a patent application published last week.
Using the technology, a prospective purchaser would take a selfie, and
the image would be authenticated against an image database using facial
recognition software. The buyer then would perform an action to verify
that the image is of a live human being.

Google Supercharges Enterprise Analytics
Google on Tuesday announced a suite of analytics products for marketers.
The Google Analytics 360 Suite is a set of integrated data and marketing
analytics products designed to give enterprise-class marketers the
ability to reach consumers with the right message at the right moment,
according to Paul Muret, Google's vice president of analytics, display
and video products.

Apple Slips Native Advertising Into News App
Apple recently updated its iAd specifications to allow the display of
sponsored posts directly in users' news feeds in the Apple News app for
the iPhone and iPad. The ads will appear in native-banner format and can
link to articles in the News app. They will be set in the same default
font as News articles and will have the same look, with a title, text
excerpt and a small image.

IDC Offers Insurance Companies New CRM Vision
IDC Health Insights on Monday outlined best practices for customer
engagement strategies to help health insurance companies adopt a
semiretail approach to interacting with members or patients. Health
insurers need an integrated customer engagement strategy enabling
automated interactions, shared communications, and appropriate
transaction and information transparency, IDC said.
